The Wisdom of Sleep

July 23, 2010

I write this at about four in the morning. For the first time in my life, I notice how “sleep” means the same thing as “sheep” (but who’s keeping count?).  Every word in every language means the same thing. But realizing this is a little like trying to unwind a spool of cotton candy…with your tongue.

If I wanted to bless anyone, I would wish them a good night’s sleep.

I’m sure that heaven has no measure of time. Except for the awareness of when to sleep. Who needs a clock when you’ve learned to live as if time were on your side?

Be infinite for a while. Dreams are just the universe listening to itself.

While you’re at it, give birth to yourself each day. You won’t know the meaning of pain and pleasure unless you do. To live and to die…that is immortality.

And being awake simply means noticing when you are asleep.

I dreamed about you last night. You were holding an hourglass. And bidding me to drink from it. Who knew the sweetness of the melody found in that silence?

My lips are sealed. My heart is open. But only at this very moment…

…already gone.
